You may already know how to download files using Torrent software by adding seeders/magnet links, but how can you make the download speed faster? IMFile is one of the popular downloading software that relies on its reliability, making it very popular. So how can you make its download speed faster? Some tips in this article can help you download files faster when using IMFile, and these tips usually apply to other software as well (such as BitTorrent, µTorrent, qBittorrent, etc.).
Things you should know#
The most important factor for seed download speed is the number of seeders, so try searching for seed files with a large number of seeders.
To make IMFile download faster, check your network conditions, current software version, and software speed limit settings.
Consider adding more trackers to your IMFile software.
If it still seems slow, consider changing the seed.
Download seed files with a large number of seeders#
Seeders are people who have already downloaded a file and are willing to continue sharing it with other users. The more seeders there are in the seed file, the faster the download speed will be. If you have the option, choose to download files with a high number of seeders for potentially faster download speeds. When you can connect to enough seeders, the download speed can reach the maximum bandwidth of your network.
Avoid downloading files with a large number of leechers#
Leechers are often seen as detrimental to the health and reliability of P2P networks. This is because if a file has few seeders but a large number of leechers, it means that many people are trying to download the file from the same limited resource pool. This can result in slow download speeds or even incomplete downloads.
When downloading a seed, be sure to leave the file in the software after downloading so that you can become a seeder. It is considered proper downloading etiquette to seed for at least the time it took to download the file.
Improve your bandwidth speed#
Try connecting your computer directly to the router instead of using Wi-Fi.
Many signals in the house can interfere with Wi-Fi connections, affecting broadband speed and file downloads.
Test your internet speed.#
Use speed testing websites or other speed testing tools to measure your broadband speed. When there is an increase in internet usage in your area, it can cause a decrease in your download speed, so try to avoid downloading files during those times.
Stay close to the Wi-Fi router when downloading.#
If you can't connect directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, keeping your device close to the router while downloading can help minimize interference from other devices or walls and improve speed. If any walls or large furniture obstruct the line of sight between your device and the Wi-Fi access point, your broadband speed may be affected.
Disconnect other devices from your Wi-Fi access point.#
If multiple devices are using Wi-Fi in your home at the same time, they are all sharing the bandwidth. If possible, ask your other family members to postpone watching videos or playing online games until you finish downloading.
Upgrade to a higher broadband speed.#
If you believe that your broadband speed is indeed slowing down your download speed, you can upgrade your broadband. This will cost you more money per month, but it may be worth it.
Download only one or two files at a time#
Check the download queue in IMFile.
Each file downloaded in IMFile takes up a portion of the bandwidth. When multiple files are downloading at maximum speed, it will take longer for these files to finish downloading. Try downloading files one by one so that you can browse the first file while waiting for the second file to finish downloading!
You can set the maximum number of simultaneous downloads in IMFile's task management to maximize available bandwidth for each individual download task. If you don't want to limit active downloads to only one or two files at a time, you can set the maximum simultaneous download count according to your own needs.
Add more trackers#
- Check which trackers are active. Trackers help share files between peers. Having more trackers for the downloaded file can potentially result in faster speeds.
- IMFile already has several built-in trackers, but you can also add other trackers yourself and configure them as needed.
- The added trackers only affect the files downloaded to the client. If you are using magnet links from online sites to extract the content of the seed, that site is already acting as your tracker.
- Make sure DHT and PEX are activated.
Increase the maximum number of connections#
Keep the server's maximum number of connections, the default being 64, unless necessary.
Enable UPnP/NAT#
- Click on Settings and select Advanced Settings. Enabling UPnP/NAT port mapping allows IMFile to bypass the firewall and connect directly to seeders. This ensures the best speed for your downloads.
- Even if you add IMFile as an exception to the firewall, enabling port mapping is the only way to completely bypass the firewall and connect directly to seeders.
- This option is enabled by default, so do not change the corresponding port number unless you are certain.
Set the maximum download speed#
Set the maximum download rate to 0 for unlimited speed. By default, your download speed is unlimited. Limiting the upload speed will not improve the download speed and may even harm it. The more you upload, the higher your download priority. However, if you want to download important files quickly, temporarily pausing uploads while downloading important files can be helpful.
Close other software while downloading#
Running other programs can occupy your disk read/write and slow down file downloads. If your memory or CPU processing power is insufficient, or if you are using a mechanical hard drive instead of a solid-state drive, it may also affect your download speed.
Keep the software updated#
If IMFile is not upgraded to the latest version, your download speed may be affected. Find the "Advanced Settings" menu's automatic update, select "Check Now," and if there are updates available, the system will prompt you to install them.
